If I Stay Quiet, My Coworker Gets Fired for My Mistake

Category: work • Theme: Honesty vs Self-Preservation

I feel sick just thinking about it. Last week, I made a mistake on one of our joint reports—switched a couple data columns without double-checking, and the numbers ended up off. Problem is, my coworker was the one who emailed the file to our boss, so it looked like it was all on her. Our manager just called me into her office, visibly frustrated, and asked if I noticed the 'pattern of errors' in my coworker's work. She hinted that HR was considering letting her go over these repeated issues. I just froze and said I wasn't sure. The truth is, those 'errors' over the past month were mostly things I did. I'm new, she's been so patient training me, and I never thought it would spiral into this. I feel like if I confess now, I could lose my job—my contract is up soon, and I can't afford to be unemployed. But watching her take the blame is eating me up inside. She's got kids, and I know how hard she works. If I say nothing and she gets fired, I don't know how I'll live with myself. But if I come clean, I might tank both my reputation and finances. I keep replaying our lunch breaks when she'd encourage me, saying everyone makes mistakes. Is it fair to let her pay for mine? What would YOU do?
