My Boss Asked Me to Falsify a Report—Should I Risk My Job?

Category: work • Theme: Job Security vs Personal Integrity

I’ve worked at my company for almost six years, and until now, I’ve prided myself on doing honest, thorough work. Last week, my boss pulled me aside and asked me to revise the numbers in a quarterly report that was already finalized. She hinted, not so subtly, that if this report didn’t show stronger results, our department could be facing major budget cuts and possibly layoffs—maybe even mine. The numbers she wanted me to change wouldn’t impact clients directly, but they’d give upper management a much rosier view of our performance than reality. She told me to just 'smooth things out,' but what she really meant was clear. I feel sick thinking about it. On one hand, I desperately need this job—I have a mortgage and a kid about to start college. If I refuse, I’m almost certain she’ll find a way to push me out. On the other hand, I’ve always considered myself an honest person, and the thought of lying in an official document makes my skin crawl. I know some coworkers have done this for her before, but I never thought she’d ask me. Part of me wonders if I should just go along, call it 'playing the game,' and move on. Another part wants to refuse outright or even consider reporting her, though I know that could create a firestorm. Or maybe there’s a way to quietly fix the numbers just slightly, hoping no one notices, and try to keep the peace. I don’t know how to balance my need for stability with what my conscience is telling me. What would YOU do?
