I’ve worked at this company for almost three years, and this past month I poured myself into a presentation that could open up a new business deal. I stayed late, missed family dinners, and even cancelled a weekend trip just to perfect every detail. The morning of the big meeting, my coworker—who’s always friendly but oddly competitive—offered to review my slides before sending them to the manager. I thought nothing of it and shared the file. When it came time for the presentation, I was left out of the meeting invite, which was odd, but I assumed it was a mistake. Then I saw the internal newsletter: My coworker was praised for the innovative project, with my exact words and graphics featured in a photo of her ‘leading the team.’ It felt like being punched in the gut.
