I’ve always considered myself a pretty honest person, even at work where things can get messy. I recently got promoted to manage our branch’s quarterly sales reporting, which was a big step up for me after years trying to prove myself. Last week, my boss called me into her office. She said upper management was on us hard about numbers and that 'everyone pads the report a little.' She asked me, point-blank, to add in some projected deals as if they’d already closed—just enough to meet our targets. She said it was 'temporary' and implied my job and the future of our team could be at stake if the numbers didn’t look better. I know that kind of thing isn’t technically legal, and it makes me feel sick inside. But at the same time, layoffs have been rumored, and I’m supporting my aging parents right now. I actually like my boss—she’s helped me so much. But I can’t help worrying I’ll be blamed if this ever comes out, or that this isn’t just once. I tried asking if there was any other way and was told to 'just get it done.' If I refuse, I risk my job, my reputation, and maybe even my boss’s trust. If I do it, I’ll cross a line I never wanted to cross, and I honestly wonder if I’ll ever feel good about work again. What would YOU do?
