My Boss Wants Me to Fudge Sales Numbers—Do I Dare Refuse?

Category: work • Theme: Career Survival vs Personal Integrity

I work as an analyst at a mid-sized company, and last week my boss called me into her office after hours. She seemed tense and closed the door, then handed me last quarter’s sales report. She quietly told me she needed me to "adjust" some numbers to show that we’d met our targets, even though we’d actually fallen short. She kept saying this was just temporary and that everyone was under extreme pressure. I honestly froze—I’ve never been asked to do anything like this before. I need this job; my partner is between jobs right now and we have rent coming up. But I also hate the idea of being dishonest and potentially exposing myself to legal or ethical trouble. Part of me wonders how many others have done this before me. If I refuse, I risk angering my boss or making myself a target for layoffs. But if I go along, I’m complicit in something that feels wrong. Every time I open the spreadsheet, my stomach turns. I’ve avoided saying yes or no so far, but the deadline is tomorrow and she keeps checking in. I feel like no matter what I do, I’m betraying my values or risking my security. What would YOU do?
