My Boss Wants Me to Omit a Costly Mistake—Do I Lie?

Category: work • Theme: Job Security vs Personal Integrity

I’ve worked in accounting at my company for almost six years. Last week, my boss called me into his office and told me, in no uncertain terms, that he needed me to leave out a substantial expense from our quarterly financial report. Apparently, one of our major projects went way over budget because of a supply chain error—the kind of mistake that, if it surfaced, could put several people (including my boss) at risk of disciplinary action. He implied that if I just quietly leave this expense out, no one will ever know. When I hesitated, he reminded me that bonuses and future promotions are on the line, and with the company’s recent layoffs, my job stability could depend on me 'being a team player.' Every night since then, I’ve tossed and turned, picturing what might happen if I falsify the report. It feels wrong, but I’ve seen what happens to people who cross him—two coworkers found themselves 'restructured' just last quarter. I worry about losing my job, about being unable to provide for my family, and about what future employers would think if there’s ever an investigation. Yet, if I refuse, there’s a good chance I’ll be let go, or worse, blacklisted from promotions—or targeted for some kind of retribution. I don’t have another job lined up, and my family depends on my income. I keep wondering if there’s some middle ground, but with the deadline approaching, I feel completely trapped, alone, and anxious every time I step into the office. What would YOU do?
