My Coworker Is About to Be Fired—Should I Intervene?

Category: work • Theme: Justice for Others vs Self-Preservation

I’m really struggling with something that happened at work. Over the past few months, I’ve watched one of my coworkers become the target of a series of mistakes that weren’t genuinely their fault. Last week, I overheard my manager talking in the break room, saying that my coworker is going to be fired soon because of these errors—a decision based on incomplete (and frankly, inaccurate) information. The truth is, I know the mistakes actually stem from a miscommunication in our team’s email handoff process, something IT flagged months ago but dropped because everyone was too busy. My coworker doesn't even know they’re under scrutiny, and no one has asked for their side. I feel sick about it. I’ve only been at this job a year, and I’m still on probation. My manager has a reputation for being unforgiving to anyone who challenges decisions, let alone someone as new as me. Speaking up could make me a target or even cost me my job—my family relies on my income. But staying silent means watching someone lose their livelihood unfairly, possibly derailing their whole career. Part of me wonders if I should email HR anonymously, or at least talk to my coworker and urge them to defend themselves. But I don’t know if that would really make a difference or just put both of us at risk. I haven’t slept in days, haunted by how powerless I feel and constantly second-guessing what the right thing even is. What would YOU do?
