My Coworker’s Job Is on the Line—Should I Intervene?

Category: work • Theme: Workplace Loyalty vs Personal Security

I’m in a horribly awkward position at work right now. Over the last week, I overheard my manager discussing that my coworker, who I’ve grown close to, is about to be fired over a project error. The thing is, I know for a fact it wasn’t really their fault—the mistake came from a miscommunication in the instructions, and I was actually there when it happened. Speaking up would mean admitting the process itself was flawed, which could upset management and maybe even make me a target. But my coworker is the kind of person who always helps out, covers shifts, and never seeks credit. If they’re let go, it would devastate them financially and emotionally. At the same time, my job isn’t secure either; I’m relatively new and don’t have much clout. If I step in, I risk not just office gossip but potentially losing my own position. But staying silent feels like a betrayal of my values—and of them as a friend. I keep imagining their reaction, the shock and confusion if they’re fired, and I know I’ll feel responsible. But I also can’t ignore my own fear. Part of me wonders if there’s a way to help without taking on the whole risk myself. This has been keeping me up at night, and I honestly don’t know which path to take. What would YOU do?
