My Coworker Stole My Pitch—Should I Expose Her?

Category: work • Theme: Justice vs Professional Relationships

I’ve been at my current job for two years, and this quarter I finally got the chance to lead a project I poured my heart into. I researched it for months, worked late most nights, and carefully crafted a proposal. Last week, my coworker—a person I considered a friend—presented my exact idea at a big meeting while I was out sick, claiming it was her own. Several details, even my unique case study, were included word-for-word. When I confronted her privately, she brushed it off and said it was just ‘teamwork.’ But everyone is now congratulating her, and my boss is considering her for a promotion. I feel humiliated, especially since I have a detailed paper trail: dated emails, messages, and draft files that prove the work was mine. But exposing her feels risky—I worry about being seen as petty or starting drama, and I don’t want to tank the team’s morale. At the same time, if I do nothing, I’m invisible. I’m stuck between protecting my reputation and keeping the peace. Every day this drags on, I feel more anxious and less sure about what I should do. What would YOU do?
