My Promotion Depends on Secretly Reporting My Team

Category: work • Theme: Career Ambition vs Workplace Loyalty

I’ve worked in my company's compliance department for three years, mostly blending in and minding my own business. Last week, my manager called me into a meeting and offered me a promotion—a significant pay bump and my own small team. But there’s a catch. The new role would require me to monitor and report on my current coworkers, without them knowing. The company suspects policy violations, misuse of time, and other things, and they want me to document anything unusual. They’ve been clear: It’s confidential, and I can’t tell anyone what I’m doing. My manager says I’m trustworthy and observant, but I can’t shake off the feeling that I’d be betraying people I go for lunch with, people who confide in me about their lives. At the same time, this is a rare chance to move up—a path that won’t open up again soon. Part of me worries that refusing could mark me as 'disloyal' to management. If I accept, my relationships at work will change. I might help stop real wrongdoing, but what if I just end up policing minor mistakes? If I refuse, I might protect my friendships and my sense of self-respect, but I might also stall my career—and burn bridges with my boss. There’s a third path too: I could ask for the promotion but with some conditions, like insisting on transparency or refusing to spy without coworkers' knowledge. That could mean risking the promotion altogether, or being seen as 'difficult.' Every option feels risky, for my future and my integrity. What would YOU do?
