My Promotion Means Secretly Reporting on Coworkers—Do I Take It?

Category: work • Theme: Career Advancement vs Workplace Trust

I never thought I'd be in this position. After three years in my department, my boss called me into her office and offered me a promotion to team supervisor—something I've quietly hoped for. But there's a catch. She explained that because of recent "productivity concerns," my new role would include monitoring and privately reporting on my coworkers' behavior: things like slacking off, minor rule-bending, and even which coworkers vent about management. She said I'd be "her eyes and ears," and it would stay between us. I've worked alongside these people for years—we vent together and have covered for each other on bad days. I know some bend the rules, but doesn't everyone? Still, the raise and management experience would be life-changing. My family could use the extra money, and it would open doors for my career. But the idea of spying and possibly betraying my team's trust makes me feel sick. I keep imagining the look on their faces if they ever found out, or how hard it would be to face them day after day. Yet, if I say no, my boss might lose faith in me—and I might never get another shot like this. I feel completely stuck. What would YOU do?
