Should I Expose My Colleague Who Stole My Idea?

Category: work • Theme: Personal Justice vs Workplace Harmony

I’ve worked at this company for nearly three years, and I finally got the chance to pitch a project idea I’d been developing on my own time for months. I kept detailed notes, emails to myself, even rough drafts with timestamps. When I shared some early concepts with a colleague I considered a friend, I never imagined it would backfire. But last week, in a meeting with our team leads, that colleague presented my idea as their own, even using some of my exact phrasing. It was surreal—I felt frozen, blindsided. The managers praised them; no one seemed to realize. I have concrete proof the idea is mine, but calling my colleague out risks making me look bitter or petty, especially since they’re well-liked and have more seniority. I worry what the team will think of me. If I say nothing, I feel like I’m betraying myself and all my effort. Yet, confronting them or management could make the work environment toxic, and I’m already anxious every morning. I can’t stop replaying it in my head: do I protect my peace or fight for the credit I deserve? What would YOU do?
