Should I Leave My Team for My Dream Job Now?

Category: work • Theme: Personal Ambition vs Team Loyalty

I just got an offer for my dream job—one I’ve been working toward for years, applying and getting rejected before, always hoping someday it would be my turn. Now, out of the blue, I’ve got it. There’s just one huge problem: at my current job, I’m leading a genuinely talented team through the busiest stretch we’ve ever faced. We’re about to launch a make-or-break project, and if I leave now, I know it’ll put everyone under serious strain, maybe even jeopardize months of effort. I keep picturing the faces of my teammates—people I’ve mentored and even call friends. I know what my absence will mean for them. On the other hand, if I turn down this new job or ask them to wait for me, I’m risking the shot I’ve worked so hard for. I know how rare it is to get another chance like this one. But every time I think about accepting the offer, I feel guilty, almost like I’m betraying the people who helped get me here in the first place. I’ve barely slept in days, trying to weigh up my future against my responsibility to my team. If I choose my dream job now, am I selfish? If I stay, will I resent missing out on my big break? Is there any way not to let someone down? What would YOU do?
