Should I Leave My Team Right Before a Make-or-Break Deadline?

Category: work • Theme: Personal Ambition vs Team Loyalty

I just got offered my absolute dream job—one I’ve chased for years, in a city I’ve always wanted to live in. The catch? They need me to start immediately, which means I’d have to give barely any notice to my current team. I manage a small but passionate group at my current company, and we’re in the final, most stressful stretch of a massive project we’ve spent six months on. I know I’m not singlehandedly responsible, but my departure now would blindside them. We’re already running tight, and I’m the main bridge between the technical staff and upper management. If I leave, I’m scared the project will collapse and everyone’s hard work will go down the drain—plus, it might put people’s jobs at risk if the client pulls out. But this new offer is the kind I might never get again. I’ve dreamed of this role for so long, and I feel like I owe it to myself to grab it while I can. I feel horribly guilty imagining my team’s faces when I tell them I’m leaving, but I also don’t want to resent them for missing my shot. Every time my phone buzzes with emails from both companies, my heart races. I barely sleep at night running through what-ifs and picturing both outcomes. Is it selfish to choose myself now? Or foolish to let this opportunity pass for loyalty’s sake? What would YOU do?
