I work in the marketing team at a mid-sized company, and things have been tense after a big campaign flopped. Recently, I overheard HR talking about letting someone go to 'set an example.' Yesterday, I saw our team lead quietly assembling a file about my coworker—the one who helped me settle in when I was new, who covered for me when my mother was sick. The thing is, she isn’t the one who messed up; I know this for certain because I was there. The real mistake was a technical glitch no one noticed in time, and my coworker’s name only came up because she was on vacation that week and couldn’t defend herself. If I step in, I’m defying my manager and risking being labeled 'difficult.' Office layoffs are already rumored, and my own job doesn’t feel safe. But if I stay silent, my coworker loses everything—her livelihood, her visa, her reputation. I barely slept last night, replaying her laugh in my head, remembering the time she brought me soup when I was sick. I keep imagining her packing up her desk, blindsided and broken.
