I just found out that my coworker, who sits a few desks away from me, is about to be fired for a mistake I know she didn’t make. The project files she’s being blamed for actually got changed by someone else late one night—I saw it happen while I was working late, but the audit trail doesn’t clearly prove it. My supervisor, who has championed my recent work, mentioned this firing in confidence and hinted that if things go smoothly, there’s a big promotion opportunity coming up—possibly for me. If I intervene, I risk jeopardizing not only my own standing but also the trust I’ve built with my boss. At the same time, I can’t stand the thought of watching a hardworking, single mom lose her job unjustly, knowing she really needs this paycheck.
