I work in logistics at a mid-sized retail company, and lately I’ve been feeling uneasy about something I’ve discovered. We routinely destroy large amounts of unsold, perfectly usable products—clothes, electronics, even food—to keep inventory low and brand perception high. It’s all logged, all within regulations, and everyone above me seems to shrug it off as just 'the way things are.' But every time I see pallets of goods heading to the landfill, I feel sick. I think about people who could use those items, and I hear my own family’s stories of struggle growing up. Last week, I mentioned to my manager that it didn't feel right, and he told me these decisions came from way above—'not our call.' Since then, he’s been cold to me, making me feel vulnerable for even bringing it up. I know some colleagues feel the same but are afraid to rock the boat. Jobs aren’t easy to come by these days, and I have bills and a kid to support. I’m not sure if I should push further, maybe escalate to HR, or even leak what’s happening—a move that could easily get me blacklisted in the industry. On the other hand, if I do nothing, I worry I’m becoming the kind of person who just looks the other way. What would YOU do?
